New Schedule for a New Year!

Out with the Olde & in with the New!!! A fresh new start...that is the way some of us look at each New Year! I am "revamping" my Blog, as I do with the beginning of each year. I like to try and keep things exciting & fun and not stay in a "rut" so to say. Also, I am taking the rest of this week off for some much needed R&R.

Hope you enjoy the new schedule!:

THE MONDAY BLUES....(1st, 3rd & 4th Monday of each Month) I thought it would be fun to share pictures of primitive items that are the lovely shade of "BLUE". This is one of my favorite colors and it sure seems to be making a comeback in Primitive Decor. This will be a fun "Eye Candy" day!

MAKEOVER MONDAY....(2nd Monday of each Month) I still like my Makeovers! So, I am going to continue sharing these with you each month! I will share with you items that I have "married" together, refinished, or just taken and gave it a new purpose! I hope to inspire you some or just have your "think out of the box" when you look at something.

"CELEBRATE THE SEASON"....(2nd Tuesday of each Month) This is something NEW that I thought you all might enjoy! Each month, I am going to share a project with you that commerates the Season we are in! We will be doing things like floral arrangements, wreaths, outdoor decor items, make-do's, etc. I think you will enjoy some of the projects I have planned for you this new year.

TIN CAN TUESDAY....(1st Tuesday of each Month) This will be just like my "Mason Jar Monday" was EXCEPT I will be sharing projects now done with your average everyday Tin Can! So, save them soup cans, tomato paste cans, and large juice cans.....cuz' you never know when you might need one! I will have 12 fun projects this year for you!

"WOOD'N IT BE NICE?!" WEDNESDAY....(3rd Wednesday of each Month) I decided to keep this still going, as I know alot of you like the Wood Projects and so do I!!! So, I will have 12 new projects for you this year as well! Some of these I think you are really going to enjoy, as a few are "larger" pieces for your home!

"SEW, YOU THINK YOU CAN'T?!" THURSDAY....(4th Thursday of each Month) Thought this might be a fun way to introduce some of you to "simple" sewing projects! Or, just to share some simple sewing projects with those of you who already do a little stitching! These will be fast & easy projects like: Primitive Stitcheries, Small Ornies/Bowl fillers, Make-do's, Wool Runners & Candlemats, etc. Nothing too hard here...or I couldn't do it either!....LOL

"FEAST ON FRIDAY".....(every Friday) I am always looking for new EASY recipes, so I am going to share 52 Amish Recipes with you this year! I have added another Amish Cookbook to my collection and I know you will just love some of these recipes!

The Day after Christmas

And Santa needs a nap!!!! I don't know about you, but I am worn out! Hope your Christmas was a day filled with laughter, love, family & friends. Now, "This Santa" is taking the day off and resting! Have a great weekend everyone!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Hate shoveling snow?! Most everyone does, at one time or another! However, I like to do it! But, I do hate when the Snow is a little wet and it tends to stick to the shovel! Here is a great tip for that!

Snow sticking to your Shovel?!

Well, to stop the snow from sticking to your Shovel and make it alot easier for you when your are shoveling....do this little trick:

Before you head outside, grab a can of your non-stick cooking spray (like Pam) and spray your shovel down with it! You will see that the snow will no longer stick to your shovel! I do take the can outside with me and spray it a few times if I am out shoveling for a while. You can also use a "silicone" spray (like boot spray) or WD-40 works well too!

12/23/09

Another Quick & Easy Tree

So, are you all ready for Christmas?! I can say, I have (I think) everyone shopped for and all the gifts are wrapped! But, let me tell you...MY DEBIT CARD IS EXHAUSTED! LOL

Well, as promised...here is my "Bonus" post for the week. This is another very quick & easy Primitive tree. Hope you enjoy! (You can click on each photo to make them bigger too)

Supplies:
*Sprigs of the Long Skinny Pine
*Dowel Rod (I am using a rod from a small 18" flag that tore over the Summer)
*Sprig of Red Pip Berries
*Rusty Star
*Hot Glue Gun
*Wire Cutters
*Ruler
*Small Container (I used a small stoneware pitcher)

Directions:
First, we need to gather up some of the sprigs of pine. I recently bought a few of these 2 ft. Pine Trees at Micheals Craft Store. They are 60% off now and this one only cost me $2.79, great deal right now on these!

So, I took and cut a few of the bottom branches off of this tree, you will need 7 of them to be exact! This will go into a crock nest year anyways and you will never see the missing branches!

Also, you will need to gather up a sprig of red pip berries. (sorry no pix of these, but we all have these somewhere around our home!)

Now, take your dowel rod and measure up from the bottom 8 inches; make a mark.

Now, with your first sprig of Pine take and apply a small dab of hot glue to your rod and attach the Pine as shown below. This piece should be approximately 7" long.

Apply another dab of glue and attach the other piece right beside it (also a 7" piece). You want it to look as one continuous piece.

Now, measure up 3" and mark. Now, you will need to cut your next two pieces of Pine to 5" long. Attach these two pieces the same exact way.

Again, mark up another 3" and mark. You will use only One Sprig this time. You will want this piece 7" long. Apply a dab of glue and attach.

Mark up another 3" and apply another piece of Pine; this one should be cut to 5".

Again, measure up another 3" and apply your last piece of Pine. This one should be cut to 3" in length.

Now, that you are finished applying all your Pine Sprigs, your tree is almost completed.

On the very top I took and tied a Rusty Star with some rusty wire. I did secure with a little hot glue to the back of the star as well.

Lastly, take your Sprig of Red Pip Berries and cut 10 of them off. Apply each one of them to the end of your Pine Branches with a very small dab of hot glue.

Place your tree in your chosen base and enjoy! Here is mine. This projects takes less than a half an hour total!

Tutorial Tuesday

First, let me say….I have been enjoying all the wonderful pictures that I have been seeing of everyone’s Christmas Decor! Oh, how I miss not having my home decorated this year! But, since I am all packed and getting ready to move (that is a story in itself!) I didn’t bring anything out this year except the Christmas Tree. And I tried to talk the kids into just letting me put all the presents around the Tree box so I didn’t even have to set that up! LOL. But, they weren’t having that! So, they decorated the tree this year.

Today’s tutorial has been inspired by all the wonderful pictures of feather trees I see out there! I love them all! I see so many different versions of them…..some large, some small, some made of feathers, some made of tree branches, some made of sprigs of artificial pine, some look more country and some are very primitive! So, I decided to make one for my self! Here is my version. I will be sharing a different version with you tomorrow, as well! Thought since I didn’t have time to post much last week, I would do a “bonus” post this week for all of you. Hope you enjoy!

Feather Tree

Supplies:

*7/16” Dowel Rod (can find these at craft stores and most hardware stores)

*3 Pine Sprigs (you can get these at Joanns or Micheals at 60% off now!)

*Hot Glue Gun

*Wire Cutters

*Dark Walnut Minwax Stain

*Very thin drill bit (I used a 5/64” bit)

*Cordless Drill

*Star of choice (I used a paper Clay one that I had from last year)

*Pot (I used a small crock)

*Floral Styrofoam

*Spanish Moss

Directions:

First, we need to take apart our Sprigs of pine.

Picture 017Picture 018

Now, we are going to separate them. You will see that there are larger ones (from the bottom of the sprig) and shorter ones (from the top of the sprig).

Lets take your Sprigs now and cut them all down! You need to do four of the longer ones about 1” from where the branches start. Also, you will need to do another four of the longer ones about 1/4” from where the branches start. Then, take your shorter ones and cut four of them about 1/4” from the branches.

Picture 019

Next, we need to measure and mark your dowel rod at 24”. I then took and cut mine with my jigsaw. Also, stain your dowel rod now with your Dark Walnut Minwax Stain.

Now, measure up from the bottom 6” and make a light mark with a pencil. Take your drill and drill straight thru your rod, then straight thru again the opposite direction. Basically making an “X” at your mark.

Picture 020

With your hot glue, take and put a little dab of glue on the end and insert it about halfways into the drilled hole; remember you need to put another one in that hole on the other side!

Do all four holes with hot glue on the stem ends and insert. It should look like this now on the bottom layer!

Picture 021

Now, let’s measure up another 6” and repeat the same process. Mark, drill, hot glue and insert stems. I did “stagger” this level, meaning that I had the branches “turned” so that the stems when in the different direction then the others.

Picture 024

Repeat this process again with the 3rd layer. This time you will be using the smallest of the stems. Again, stagger them.

Now, take and place your star on top of your dowel rod. I used the hot glue and adhered on there.

I then took and inserted floral styrofoam into my small crock and placed my dowel rod into it. I did secure it too with hot glue!

Take and hot glue some spanish moss on top of the floral foam to cover it.

This is what my feather tree looks like completed!

Finally....It's Friday!

I usually post either a "Freebie" today or a New Recipe for all of you...but, I am taking time today to just do a little Q&A that I found over at Loretta's (Under the Wild Cherry Tree). Thought this would be fun for a change. Besides, I am just trying to take a little "me" time these past few days. I have been SO busy with work, church volunteering, kiddos schoolwork, orthodonist & doctor appointments, holiday baking & decorating, shopping, house packing, so on and so on...that I just need some "me" time. I have been so busy that if I didn't have some of my posts already "scheduled" for posting, I wouldn't have posted some of the things I have this past couple of weeks!

Well, here is a little bit bout me.

Q&A

1. Wrapping paper or Gift Bags?
Just depends on the gift, I think! Some gifts are just too hard to find the right box or just wrap...so for those ones DEFINATELY a gift bag!

2. Real tree or Artificial?
ARTIFICAL! I like to have a tree (or two) in every room! I have 3 large trees and MANY small trees scattered throught the inside and outside of my home!

3. When do you put up your Tree?
I start the day after Thanksgiving. This works best because my hubby leaves for his hunting camp and that is just one less person in my house to work around! However, I have been itching the last few years to start a little earlier! So, who knows what next year might hold!

4. When do you take the tree down?
New Years Day. Only because if I don't do it then, they will probably be up til the end of January! Hubby watches football all day...and I clean up! Not sure if that is a good trade off?!!!!

5. Do you like Eggnog?
I have NEVER tried it! Just the thought of raw eggs makes me not want to ever try it!

6. Favorite Gift received as a Child?
Wow, I can't really remember! I think because every year was always a special Christmas at home with my sister and parents! We were really Poor back then, so we never really dwelt on the "gifts". We just made Christmas Day magical with music playing, eating a wonderful meal, and just enjoying the one or two gifts that we might have gotten that day! Ahhhh, What wonderful memories!

7. Hardest person to buy for?
My parents! They have everything they need now. So, I don't dwell on the "gift" and just usually give them something simple, we have Christmas breakfast at my sisters house with the "WHOLE" family and just enjoy the day with them! And you know, to them that is just enough!

8. Easiest person to buy for?
My kids and hubby. The kids make lists and the hubby likes anything!

9. Do you have a Nativity Scene?
Yes, it is a Primitive/Country one that I display on my sidetable.

10. Mail or Email Christmas Cards?
I still like the Cards coming in the mail!

11. Worst Christmas gift ever recieved?
I can't recall any! I like anything that someone takes the time to think of me and give! I am very sentimental! Ask my kids, I save everything they have ever made!!!!

12. Favorite Christmas movie?
I love the cartoon classics like Frost & Rudolph! But, I do LOVE "The Polar Express" and "Home Alone"!

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I usually start picking things up here and there around August! But, I am still rushing around in December to finish up!

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas gift?
Not that I can ever remember! I tend to cherish everything I get....or my KIDS take it first! LOL

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
My Dad's Stuffing! Let's just say it is HEAVENLY! Also, my MIL homemade noodles...YUMMY!

16. Lights on the tree?!
ABSOLUTELY! My hubby says that the Electric Company loves me during the holidays! Not only do my trees have lights, but there are lighted objects EVERYWHERE! hehehehehehehehe

17. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Stay home! There is no place like home for the holidays!

18. Open the presents Christmas Eve or Day?
Both! We have Christmas Eve with my Hubbys side of the family and Christmas Day with my side of the Family! Two fun filled day of "Flying Wrapping Paper"!!!!

I AM ADDING THESE 2 QUESTIONS:

19. Do you play Christmas Music while opening the gifts?
YES!!! I get up and put Christmas music on right away!

20. Is there any specific "tradition" that you do?
My family has hosted Christmas Breakfast as long as I can remember. So we have Christmas breakfast bright and early with my side of the family every Christmas morning!

Now, its your turn! If you would like to play along, just post this on your blog and let Lois ( http://wifeofthecolonel.blogspot.com/ ) know you played along!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Today's tip has nothing to do with crafting, but still this is a great tip that you can use when applying your makeup for all them Christmas/New Years Eve parties! This I actually learned from my 13 year old!

"Clump-Free" Defined Eyelashes

Love the look of beautiful Clump-free eyelashes? Want your Mascara to be alot easier to apply? Well, then all you need to do is....take a tall glass and fill it full of HOT tap water, then place your tube of Mascara in it! Let sit for a few minutes to "warm", then apply!!! You will find that the Mascara is so much silkier and easier to apply to your Eyelashes...and "clump-free"!!! So, now your eyelashes will seem more defined!

We were to send our partner 1 yard of our fabric of choice, well we decided to send each other a 1/2 yard of 2 different fabrics. Well, here is what Jan made with my fabric! I love this piece! This is the "Goodwill/Thrift Shop find"!!! I just love, love, love this box! Lots of goodies will be displayed in this! Look at the old leather strap handle! This is just Primitively perfect!

She also sent along this WHOPPING bag of rosehips!!! I just weighed them and there is just a little over 2 pounds here! Love this! She also sent along some of her own simmer Orange Clove potpourri and a Gingerbread Candle in a Jar, but I seemed to have lost those pix somewhere! "Wood'n it be Nice?" Wednesday

Sorry for posting this today! This is actually yesterdays post, but I have been so busy that I literally could not finish this up until today! We have plumbers in our house tapping in our sewage lines to city sewage and they had to cut up my concrete basement floor. No big deal usually, but this is my craft area! So, my craft room has been pretty much "off limits" since last week! But, I did sneak down while they were at lunch and finished this in the garage.

Here is a project that is made with just using some of my scrap wood.

Wooden Wall Box

Supplies:
*Scrap piece of wood (I am using an old coffee table top that is 1x15x24. You can use two pieces of 1x8 placed together for this project)
*Scrap piece of 1x6 pine (cut two of them 2 1/2" long and one piece 12" long)
*Scrap piece of 1x4 pine (cut 10 1/2" long)
*3 Square head Masonary Nails (I rusted mine!)
*Small drill bit
*Craft paints of your choice & Dark Walnut Stain
*Decorations

Diretions:
First, we are going to make the "box" on the front. We will do this by taking your 1x6x12 piece and nailing in your two 1x6x2 1/2" pieces to each end.

Now, lets add your "bottom" to the box. Take your 1x4x10 1/2" piece and nail it in along the bottom inbetween the sides.

Now, lets attach the box to your board. Attach this from the back using atleast 1 1/4" finishing nails. I centered mine on my board and measured up 6" from the bottom.

Next, I am going to take my Masonary nails and space them out evenly along the bottom about 3" up from the bottom of the board.

Time to paint your piece! I just used Black, then I sanded it and applied a dark walnut stain all over. Then just wiped it right back off.

Time to decorate! Fill your box with some greens and add some hanging candles from rusty nails. Here is my finished box! I did add a stenciled star to the top of the board as well..

Makeover Monday & New Freebies!

First, let me say "Sorry" for not posting anything this past Friday! I have had the busiest 2 weeks doing "Christmas Decorating & Props" for my church. Whewwww, just glad to finally be able to catch my breath and relax (hopefully...lol).

Now, back to todays post!

Found these pieces at my local Goodwill and I thought I would "marry" them all together and make a new Sconce! This is a very easy project that anyone can do. This can be hung on the wall or sit on a table, they also make great bookends! Hope you enjoy!

Sconces

Here is the all the pieces that I found (a unfinished wooden breadboard, a small plaque, and a wooden candlecup):
Photobucket

First thing I did was take the small plaque and cut it right in half:
Photobucket

Next thing I did was painted out the bread board in a black:
Photobucket

Then I attached the plaque to the bottom of the breadboard:
Photobucket

Lastly, attach the candlecup and paint the piece out in the color you choose! I painted it black, added a beeswax candle and instant lighting!

FREEBIES!
Just added a few new tag-sized freebies in my "freebie box" on the right side column! These look great coffee stained and hanging on your packages or tree! Enjoy!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Well, I have been wanting to write a post on Blogging Tips. Not tips on: how-to-post pictures, links, or even how-to start a Blog...but, Tips on Blogging itself!

When I first started my Blog, I had a few (okay alot!) of complaints, some "constructive" criticism (okay alot of that too!) and some very good "Tips" along the way too! So, I thought I would just pass some of those "Tips" onto you all today!

BLOGGING TIPS

Tip #1: SPELL CHECK! Yep, it is right up there across the top for us all to use....so, why don't we use it? Well, if you are in hurry like me and just need to finish up that post...then Spellchecking is the last thing on your agenda. BUT, ITS A GREAT TOOL...SO LET'S ALL REINTRODUCE OURSELVES TO USING IT! I AM GUILTY OF THIS ONE TOO!

Tip #2: PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES! Need I say more?! Who does not LOVE to see Eyecandy?! Or Visual Steps when doing a Tutorial?! I sure do!!! I am not saying you can't have a post without them, but PLEASE don't make this a regular habit! I will speak personally here...I NEED PICTURES OR I GET BORED WITH A BLOG VERY QUICKLY!

Tip #3: ANSWER EMAILS! If you don't want people to contact you with a question, a nice comment or just a thank you...then don't give your email addy! Enough said on that.

Tip #4: DARK BACKGROUND TEMPLATES! This was one of the most complaints that I have gotten when I first started my Blog! I know that "Primitive" looks best when you do a dark black background...but, some people REALLY have a hard time seeing your Blog with this background. I see it clearly, but not everyone does! So, scrap that Black background and grab a new one that everyone will enjoy! There are lots of places now that offer free backgrounds, so use them up...not many things in life are FREE anymore!

Tip #5: MUSIC! Yep, I LOVE IT! I am so guilty of this one but, only during Christmas! I have alot of people with Dial-up that say that it just takes too long for a page to load with Music on it. So, all year long I do NOT have music on my blog. But, I just can't resist Christmas Music!!! So, let me be the first to say "I AM SORRY, BUT I MUST PLAY MY CHRISTMAS MUSIC!". I still hope you all will continue to visit though!

Tip #6: Lastly, HAVE FUN! Joke around, say silly things, but just HAVE FUN! We all have our share of problems, but sometimes Blogging with our Friends takes our minds off of those "problems"! If only for a minute! So, brighten someones day with some Eye Candy, silly things that your Pet or Kids have done, or share a new craft. But, please don't go on and on about how your neighbor makes you sick! I have a few of them myself, believe me, I could go on and on too! But, brighten someones day instead!

These "Tips" were NOT to offend anyone or any Blog! I just thought I would pass on some things that I have learned since I starting my Blog over a year ago. LOVE YA ALL!

Milk Paints anyone?

I have been really busy cleaning out some of my crafting supplies and I just came across these! These are original milk paints from "The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company". These are geniune Milk Paints that you mix yourself! Each bag makes one pint of that wonderful Old Fashioned Milk paint. I have 7 of the 8 paints left in this bundle pack. I did use the Mustard Colored one for a project I did awhile back.

These are all in excellent shape and unused! Each paint sells for $9.95 plus shipping at their website. If you love that Old Milk Paint finish that true old antiques have, then you will love this paint!

Here are all the colors you will recieve: Barn Red, Pumpkin, Bayberry, Lexington Green, Soldier Blue, Oyster White, Pitch Black.

I am selling the set of 7 for $55 with Free Shipping to U.S. residents. If you are interested in these please email me.

Tutorial Tuesday

This is a project that I did last year on the smaller plastic Candy Canes. So, this year I thought I would do them to the larger plastic Candy Canes....and I love them! I still think I might add a little greenery to them yet and maybe a rusty jingle bell. But, these will look good sitting in a large crock by my fireplace.

These are a no-sew project, which makes them so easy that anyone can do them!

No-Sew Candy Canes

Supplies:
*Plastic Candy Canes (I got these from Dollar General and I am using the larger ones.)
*Coffee Dyed Muslin
*Fat Quarter of Red/Wine Colored Fabric
*Hot Glue gun

Directions:
These are the Candy Canes I am going to be wrapping:
Photobucket

First, we are going to start by taking your Muslin & Red Fabric and tear them into 1" strips.
Photobucket

Now, with your hot glue gun, start at the bottom of your Candy Cane and just start wrapping your Muslin fabric around until you have completly covered your Candy Cane. Secure the every now and then with a little dab of hot glue and secure the end with hot glue when you are done wrapping.
Photobucket
Photobucket

Next, we are ready to start wrapping your red colored fabric for the stripping. I start this time at the top of the Cane and wrap down to the end, making sure to secure every little ways with a dab of hot glue. When you have finished wrapping, secure the end with the hot glue.
Photobucket

Here they are finished. Much more Prim! Now, I do think I am going to add a small piece of greenery to the middle along with a rusty bell.
