Friday's Fact "Life in the 1500's"

I know, today is supposed to be my "Feast On!" Friday. But, I thought that you might all enjoy today's post, and I like to "shake" thing up sometimes! Keeps life interesting!

These are all true, interesting facts that I thought you might enjoy! If not, atleast be thankful we are living in the era we are! I know I am! Hope you enjoy!

* LIFE IN THE 1500'S *

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500's:

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water.

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying. It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

Beds used to consist just of a frame & matress. The matress was not held by a box spring and boards, but instead heavy ropes were tied across the frame of the bed to hold the matress in place. So, each night before a person would lay in bed, they had to take a hand hewn wooden winder and tighten the strings of the bed so it wouldn't sag throughout the night. Hence the saying, Sleep tight.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor.

The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme; Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the drinkers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a ...dead ringer.

Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Don't you just hate it when you are right in the middle of painting, and you must leave?! Or the phone rings and it is an important call that you must take?! Or you just have to clean up for the night cuz it is getting late and you will need to finish in the morning?! Want to keep your brush from drying out?! Well, here's a great tip for you!

Paint Brush Tip

If you find that you need to hurry and leave while in the middle of painting and don't have time to clean your brush out, all you need to do is.....
THROW IT IN A ZIPLOC BAGGIE OR WRAP IT IN A PLASTIC GROCERY BAG AND POP IT IN THE FRIDGE!
This will keep your paint brush "fresh" so you can just pick it back up and start using it again! This works great for those paint jobs that run late into the evening and you didn't get to finish up, and wanna start again in the morning!
Also, if you know you will not be able to get to your project within a few days, you can prolong that "keep" time by:
THROWING YOUR PAINT BRUSH IN A ZIPLOC BAGGIE AND POP IT IN THE FREEZER! Let thaw, and you are good to go!

"Wood'n it be Nice?!" Wednesday & A Swap!

Today's project I just love! I have had this hanging in just about every room of the house at one time or another! It is such a simple design, but was a "staple" item one time in Primitive homes for drying them wool socks! I am certain each home had multiples of these hanging around too. Not only did they help to dry them Wool Socks, but helped them retain their shape.

These would make a wonderful gift for another Primitive friend without "breaking the bank"! I hope you enjoy today's project!

Sock Dryer/Stretcher

Supplies:

*Jigsaw
*Pencil
*Sandpaper
*1"x8"x20" piece of wood
*Small Drill Bit
*1" Spade Bit
*Drill (I love my cordless one!)
*Paint or Stain of your choice (I chose black paint & Dark Walnut Stain)
*8" piece of rusty wire, leather strapping, twine, etc for hanging

First, you are going to take the pattern below, save it to your computer, print it out on piece of cardstock, then cut it out and tape it together since this 2 pieces.
Photobucket

Now, take your pattern to your piece of wood and trace it onto the wood.
Photobucket

Take your design and cut it out now using your jigsaw. I just love my Jigsaw!!!
Photobucket

Now, take your 1" spade bit and drill all the holes shown. This is going to take a minute, but let the drill do the work for you! Also, take your small drill bit and drill a hole in the top for you to thread your wire through to hang.
Photobucket

Time to paint or stain your piece! I chose to paint mine Black. Let dry completely.
Photobucket

I then distressed the piece by sanding ALOT of the paint back off! I figured that these were probably a very well used item in the house and it would not be pretty still! After sanding, I wiped the whole thing down with Dark Walnut Stain. Then I let it dry completely.
Photobucket

Finish by putting a piece of Rusty Wire, leather strapping or twine thru the top hole to hang. Enjoy!

SWAP!

Just a reminder to anyone who is interested...I posted a "Laundry Room Swap" yesterday. If you are interested please read yesterday's post, I'd love to have you!!! Also, I thought you might all enjoy looking at these wonderful Laundry Rooms for inspiration: http://www.aprimitiveplace.org/Laundry_Rooms.html . I had a few people say that they don't know what they would make for a laundry room. Well, here are are a few ideas:
  • Primitive lighting (maybe done in an old laundry box or small wash tub)
  • Wooden sign
  • Primitive stitchery
  • Lye Soap
  • Old basket
  • Primitive Socks

Hope this helps!

"Laundry Room" Swap anyone?

No, I am not swapping Laundry Rooms with anyone! This is just as deceiving as saying "Garage Sale" because they are not really selling the Garage now-are they?!

However, I am in the midst of trying to "spruce up" my laundry area. This is one place that I hate to be in, but I must, so why not make it a cozy place too-right?! So, I would like to hold an "unusual" kind of swap with you all! If you are looking to add a few new things to your laundry room too, then this might just be the swap for you!!!

I know Blog Land is a VERY large area, so I am setting some Rules with this one! First, because I know others have done swaps before from Blogs and have been "burnt" by other swappers with not receiving their goodies. So, rules we MUST HAVE!

There are a few basic rules we must all play by. So here they are:
  • You MUST have an active Blog! Sorry, this just ensures you are fairly commited to Blogging along with friends. By "Active" I mean posted to your blog within the last month!
  • You MUST have posted with me atleast 3 times or more! (I will check too if I don't recognize your name, but I know most of my commenters anyways!) Just making sure I am familiar with you.
  • You MUST live in the USA! Sorry internationals, I just know shipping costs are getting out of hand, although we LOVE you guys, I know most of you feel the same about shipping to the USA....It is expensive!!!
  • You MUST commit to sending atleast 3 items in your package to your partner! Atleast ONE of them being handmade by YOU!!! We all cherish those handmade items!
  • Your package MUST be atleast a $25 value! This just makes it fair for everyone who plays.
  • You MUST be on time! Sorry, I HATE late packages! Just a pet peeve of mine! Nothing like anxiously awaiting a package to find it shows up 2 months late! I know all you swappers will agree with me if you ever had to wait! So, don't wait til the last minute to start your swap!
  • You MUST thank your partner when you receive your goodies! I HATE ungratefulness!!! I know we are all busy, but we all make time to check our emails-don't we?! So, thank your partner for your package!
  • You MUST get a Delivery Confirmation # when your package has been sent out! You MUST email me that number too! That if there is any lost packages, we can hopefully track them done, and know for sure that you sent it & on time too!
  • You MUST have your Info to me by Feb. 28th. I will get the Swap names out to everyone on March 1st.
  • You MUST mail out your package by March 31st! This gives everyone one month to complete their swap!
  • This will be a "One on One" Swap. So, once I gather all the names, I will email everyone their partners!

Now, I will trust that everyone who wants to play is willing to play by the rules! But, just in case there are those of you that end up not (this has happened on other blogs!), as I tell my children:

There are consequences to every action; Good or bad? You decide!

  • If you don't play by the Rules, you WILL be blocked from my Blog!!! Sorry, I know life happens, that is why I said, "Don't wait til the last minute to start your swap!"
  • Remember, Blog land is a Huge Arena we play in....but, it runs in very SMALL circles! I know we all like to leave good impressions on our SMALL circle friends!

Okay, I know that all seemed so very harsh with Rules & Regulations...but, they are really just Swapping Courtesy I think! Just want to make sure this Swap turns out a "Good One not Gone Bad"! So, if you are interested in doing this swap....click on the "email me" icon on my right side toolbar. I will need your Blog Name, Name, & mailing addy.

I hope I didn't scare anyone away! So, if you wanta do a little "sprucing up" in that area of the house that might be overlooked, then come join in the fun!

Mason Jar Monday!

This has become such a handy little gadget that I keep in my craft room. I am able to just carry it out and do any sewing or mending on my garments with all the tools I need right there. Kinda like a make shift sewing caddy!

However, you can fill it with whatever you like. Wouldn't this make a wonderful gift for that man in your life?! Fill it with some "game time" peanuts or candies! How about bringing this to a friend for Easter?! Fill it with some colorful candies or jelly beans! How bout presenting this to your Boss or Co-Worker Friend for Easter?! This would be a great item that they could just leave out on thier desk!

Really the possibilites are endless, just have fun and customize it for the recipient!

Mason Jar Caddy

Supplies:
*1x4 board cut 12" long (you can get this cut FREE at Lowes or Home Depot)
*Handle of your choice
*E6000
*Several 1" nails (I used small brads)
*3 Mason Jars with lids & bands (any size)
*Craft Paint of choice
*Dark Walnut Stain
*Sandpaper

First, take your 1x4 and paint the top & all four sides in color of choice. Let dry completely. Now, sand lightly around the edges to slightly distress it. Wipe a small amount of stain over top the paint, the sanded edges, and the underside. Wipe stain completely off and let dry for about 15 minutes.

Photobucket

Take and put your lids inside your bands, and arrange them onto the board, spacing evenly as shown in photo. Now, take atleast 3-4 nails into the lids to securely attach them to the board.
Photobucket

Now take your handle and with your E6000 attach it to the top of your carrier (the painted side). Let this dry overnite or longer, I prefer 24 hours. Making sure this is centered and the way you want it, cuz once this is dry, it is dry FOREVER!
Photobucket

Once your handle has dried, you can now fill your Mason Jar with Goodies! What a great little Caddy this is! Enjoy!

"$5 & Under!" Friday

This is an exciting 2 for 1 day!!! In honor of Springtime & Easter heading our way, I have made two projects today...and both for under $5.00!!!

I know alot of you Primitive crafters don't do the light pastel colors, but sometimes you just gotta say "What the hay!" and go for it! That is just what I have done here, and all you Prim Lovers, hold your ears.....I AM USING THESE ALONGSIDE MY PRIMITIVES! Yep, and I love them! At this point, I am so sick of the dark, drab, cold Winter, that I think a few bright colors might look good! Atleast it is giving me some hope that Spring might get here someday!

I also see that Cottage Chic is making a come back! Seems every magazine you look in has some kind of Cottage inspired them in them. I was personally a Cottage/Shabby Chic Gal up until about 2 years ago! Shhhhhh, don't tell none of my Primitive friends....we'll just keep this among ourselves!

Well, I have bored you enough....on with the project!

Springtime/Easter Candleholder & Candy Dish

Supplies :
*Shaped & colored candle dish (found at $ Tree in various colors & shapes)
*Glass Candlestick (you can find these at the $ tree or usually at thrift shops cheaper..got mine for 50 cents each!)
*Glass Bowl ($ tree)
*Candle (found at $ tree in various colors, just coordinate it with your candle dish)
*E6000

Photobucket

First, we are going to start your Pillar Candlestick.

Let's start by putting a bead of glue all the way around your candlestick top.
Photobucket

Now, attach your colored candle dish to your candlestick. Let dry overnite for this to completely dry. Make sure you have it centered, because once this is dry....IT IS DRY FOREVER!
Photobucket

Take your piece of ribbon that came on the Candle dish box and tie a nice bow around your candlestick. Place your candle in dish, light and enjoy!!!
Photobucket

Time for your Candy Dish!

Again, lets start by putting a bead of glue all the way around your candlestick top.
Photobucket

Now, center your glass bowl ontop of your candlestick. Let dry overnite.

In the morning, fill with candy & enjoy!!!

Hope next time you are at the Dollar Store you take and look at what is on the shelves and "think outside the box"! Then you can have your own custom made pieces that no one else will have!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!" & Spring/Easter Gatherings Wanted!

Here are a few tips for using that Lye Soap from Tuesday's Tutorial!

How useful is Lye Soap?!

1. It's a gentle relief for Poison Ivy or Oak.
2. This is an "old" secret for that Catfish fisherman! Put a small chunk onto your hook & the catfish just love it!
3. This works better than bleach on your whites & stains! So, if your white socks are looking dingy or have a spot on that white shirt, just rub on stain & wash! You can also take and shave some into your wash to brighten up your whole white wash load!
4. Have your "hunter" use this soap before going out to hunt.....As the lather hides human scent!
5. This is great in the summertime for sunburn! Just wash with it instead of perfumed soaps & it will help to soothe that sunburn!
6. Got a problem with bugs on your plants? Well, take a few shavings of this soap into warm water for it to dissolve, shake and spray onto your plants. It won't harm the plants but it will get rid of the bugs!
7. Wash your pets with it! It elliminates ticks, chiggers, fleas and dander on you and your pets!
8. Helps eliminate the yellow color in white hair.
9. Controls dandruff and makes hair shine.
10. Relieve pain and itching from athlete's foot.
11. This is great for getting rid of LICE! Don't buy those expensive kits, just use lye soap! It is not harsh on the hair, yet gets rid of LICE just as well!
12. Mosquitos hate lye soap! So, if you bathe with it during the summer months....mosquitos don't seem to be drawn to you as with perfume soaps!

My New Quilt!!!

Just yesterday, I was posting about wanting a new quilt so bad I was even considering making one myself. Although that is not entirely out of the question, I am so glad to say that I just found one that I have just fallen in love with!

It is an off-white colored quilt with Redwork....YES, REDWORK! I LOVE IT!!! It is 100% cotton and done very well! You will never guess where I found it at?! CRACKER BARREL! I was getting ready for work last night and remembered that I had seen quilts before there once when we stopped to eat. So, I left out early to stop by and see if they still have them. I am so glad I did! They had several different styles to choose from and they are very reasonably priced too. I bought the king-sized one for $129 and the queen-sized were priced at only $99!!! So, if you are in search of a quilt, head on over to your local Cracker Barrel...you just might fall in love with one there!

Now, I do have to say...these definately run a little bigger in size. So, if your bed is a Queen size, get that size! I decided to purchase the King size comforter because it was 100% cotton and I never wanted it to shrink when I washed it. Well, these are already oversized I see! So, shrinkage will be fine. I now have to run back to Cracker Barrel tonite and return this one for the smaller size. That is okay though...cuz I wanted the matching $30 shams!!! NOW I WILL GRAB THEM!!! hehehehehehe

I did want to show you what it looks like though anyways. The tag is still on it in the one picture, only because this one is going back. Also, I will tell you that it is a cream color and the red is a deep beautiful Red! Look how beautiful it is!!!

Tutorial Tuesday & Quilt Question?

Today's post is a little different, meaning I don't have all the pictures that most of you have come to love, of all the steps to the project. I am really sorry for that, but if you follow my epattern instructions, you will be just fine...trust me!

I know with the cold & dry winter weather, you will love this homemade soap recipe. This is a soap that is not only pure, mild, creamy & fragrance free, but very good for treating conditions like: acne, psoriasis, sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea. It also helps ease the discomfort of Poison Ivy or Oak!

I have added this epattern to the right in my little green box for you to download and print out from your computer. I hope you enjoy making this soap, I know once you use it....You will see a huge difference in how soft your skin will become. MAYBE GRANDMA HAD IT RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING!!! Enjoy!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!" & THE WINNER IS....

Here is a great money saving tip for all you Febreeze users out there! I personally was one of them, cuz I just love the fresh scent that it gives to fabric and textures. *Large Spray Bottle (can find them at $ tree or Walmart)
*Liquid Fabric Softner (I like Suavital)

Directions:
Take your Liquid Fabric Softner and fill bottle a little more than a 1/4 of the way with fabric softner. If you like it stronger smelling, you can add more.
Fill the bottle the rest of the way with warm water. Shake to mix.
Now, you are ready to spray it around your room! I like to spray my curtains, pillows, linens, and carpets with it! I have never had a problem with it staining anything yet, and I use it always! Just remember to shake your bottle before using to mix the solution each time.

"Wood'n it be Nice?!" Wednesday

Another woodworking day, ahhhhhh, this is truely my favorite day to spend with all of you! Although I love posting and crafting on my other scheduled days, there is just something about working with wood that I love! It was one of the first crafts that I fell in love with over 20 years ago, and it still is a passion of mine.

Well, today's project is a VERY SIMPLE & EASY PROJECT! The best part is....If you can use a hammer....you can make today's project!!! NO JIGSAWING, NO MEASURING, NO TRACING NO PATTERNS, NOTHING!!!!!.......Just pound in some nails! Are you excited now?! Ready to get your hammer out?! Then, Let's get started!!!

"Long Square Trencher"

supplies:
*1- 1"x4"x4' board (have them cut this into (2) 24" boards....Lowes & Home Depot will cut your wood for FREE!)
*1- 1"x2"x6" board (have cut from this: (2) 5 " boards & (2) 24" boards...you will have about a 2" piece left over from this board to discard)
*Wood Glue
*Craft paint or Stain of choice
*Hammer
*1" finishing nails

Now that you got your cut boards home, this is very easy to assemble!!!
Photobucket
First, you are going to nail your longest pieces (2' boards) to the outside of your board. Just make sure you make your board is even at the ends and even on the bottom where it sits....this is called "flush". The only part sticking up will be the top where you will want a little "lip" to hold things inside your trencher. First, I put a little line of wood glue onto the area I am going to be attaching the wood; do this sparingly. Then I like to put a nail in the middle of my board first, then one on each side, then nailing in between each nail.
Photobucket

Now take and repeat this process with the "end caps" of your trencher. Making sure the bottom and ends are flush with the other boards your have already attached.
Photobucket

Next, you are ready to paint or stain your trencher! I have chosen to give mine a mustard paint. So, I just basecoated the whole trencher with black craft paint; let dry completely. Came back and top coated it with a mustard colored craft paint; let dry completely. Sanded around the edges, and then applied dark walnut stain to it! That's it!

Now here is the fun part.....fill your trencher with your goodies! You can fill it with scented Rosehips, Candles, Tea lights, bowl fillers, Candlesticks, etc. Just have fun with it, and change it out with the seasons! This looks great on a dining room table, buffet, fireplace mantle, etc. Enjoy!

Here it is ready for Valentines Day with my heart pinkeep & tea lights:
Photobucket

*<
Again and ready for Easter with a Bunny Candle and some paper mache' eggs:
Photobucket
****IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THIS TRENCHER LONGER OR SHORTER, DO SO BY JUST CUTTING THE LENGTH OF YOUR 1X4 AND THE LENGTH OF YOUR 1X2 SIDE PIECES THE SAME....NOT CHANGING THE END CAPS AS THEY WILL STAY THE SAME 5" REGARDLESS WHATEVER LENGTH YOU MAKE YOUR TRENCHER! A TOTALLY CUSTOM PIECE FOR YOU!

2/9/09

Today's project is one that I hope you will enjoy! It is a very Primitive project and with just a few tools you can have yourself a beautiful lighted Mason Jar!

I am NOT going to post a whole tutorial on this one since I already have a PDF pattern made up already. This was a pattern I had offered a while back when Ebay actually let Epatterns on there. You can grab the Epattern in my Freebie box on the right!

I know that some of you find it hard to do the drilling in glass. You can take your jar to a glass or mirror cutting shop and for just a few dollars they will drill them for you. So, this is another alternative to drilling the glass yourself.

Also, if you don't wanta go thru the hassel of tearing apart the electric light to put into your Mason jar, I have since then taken this easier route.....
Step 1: Cut your cord just ABOVE your on/off clip (if you don't have this feature go to step 2)
Step 2: Cut your plug completely off.
Step 3: Go to your local hardware store (Lowes or Home Depot) and purchase a clip light adapter....you will want the one that you will need to feed a "cut line" into.
Step 4: Also purchase a new plug and install this where your original plug was.
***The clip light and plug are very easy to install...so, don't fret!

I used a larger Mason Jar for my project, and I love how it turned out....perfectly Primitive!

*8 slices of Texas Toast Bread (or 8 slices of bread atleast 1" thick)
*1/4 cup cream cheese
*1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
*1/4 cup strawberry jam
*1/2 banana (sliced)

powdered sugar for dusting
maple syrup

Directions:
Divide 1 tablespoon of cream cheese & spread one side of each of the slices of the bread. Now, take and place 1 Tablespoon of the chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of the strawberry jam and banana slices onto one slice of the cream cheese bread .

Place the other cream cheese sliced bread ontop of the "filled" bread slice. Now Close the bread as best as possible now gently pinching the sides together.

In a bowl, beat together eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla. Dip the stuffed bread slices into the egg mixture, turning to soak both sides evenly.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the stuffed bread to the pan and cook, turning each slice over several times to let it brown evenly and allow the heat to melt the chocolate ; approximately 5 minutes total.

Dust lightly with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup. Enjoy!!!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

I good friend of mine, Carol, sent me this list of things you can do with coffee filters....so, I thought I would pass them off to all of you!....Thanks Carol!!!!

COFFEE FILTERS
Coffee filters ..who knew! And you can buy 1,000 at the Dollar Tree for almost nothing.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.
2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
3. Protect ChinaSeparate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.
4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.
9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to
prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.
12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters.
13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.Soaks out all the grease.
14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great "razor nick fixers."

Tuesday's Tutorial!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today's project is something I hope you will enjoy! Since Valentines is just around the corner, this would be a great project for a Valentine's Dinner or just a tablescape. I am calling this project...."The Eternal Grubby Candle", because this candle will never burn away, even when lit! Hope you enjoy!

"The Eternal Grubby Candle"

Supplies:
*Any Color/Scent Pillar Candle (atleast 3" or larger)
*Tea Light or Battery Operated Candle
*1 3/8" Spade Bit
*Cordless Drill
*Mod Podge
*Paint Brush
*Allspice, Cinnamon, Nutmeg (I like the Allspice!)
OPTIONAL: Grungy Cheesecloth, Charms, Buttons, Homespun, etc.

Let's Start our project! First, we need to make a "well" into our candle. This is what is going to make it "Eternal"! Your candle will now never actually be burned!!! So, once you make it, you will always have it!
Photobucket

To make our "well" in the candle, you will need to use the spade bit. Take your spade bit and drill down into your candle approximately 1/2". Clean out the candle shavings and insert your tea light; checking to make sure the depth is correct. This will be a snug fit at first, but shove it down in anyways....LOL. Now, just wiggle it back out...or you can use a butter knife to help get it back out. Once you have achieved your depth, lets move on!

We are now going to Grubby up your candle, also if you are going to be using a battery operated tea light do this now too ( you will only need to do the top of the tealight and a little down the side, not the whole thing or it will not fit into the well). This is very simple. I just cover my candle with Mod Podge, cover it completely! Now, just sprinkle your Allspice over your wet Mod Podge; shake off excess. I once again, repeat this process; cover with Mod Podge and sprinkle with Allspice, and shake off excess.

Now, take your Allspice covered candle and completely cover with Mod Podge. Let this dry for several hours, I usually let dry overnite. This will "seal" your candle with the spices.

Once dry, tie a piece of grubby cheesecloth or homespun around the candle and add a charm or button.

Now, insert your tea light into the "well" of the candle. I do like to burn candles, so I just purchase scented tea lights. Light the tea light and when it is done burning, just take out and replace with a new one! You candle will last forever and never burn down.....even though it is a burning candle!!! Enjoy!
