A good laugh for you!

I know some of you might have seen this one circulating in your email before...but, I love the new Prayer someone added!

The Shoe Box

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said She would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she said, 'my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll. 'The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.'

'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?''Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling the dolls!

MY PRAYER
Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man;
Love to forgive him, and Patience for his moods.
Because Lord, if I pray for Strength,
I'll beat him to death, because I don't have time to crochet!!!

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Today's tip is a little different than my usual posts on Thursday's. Today's tip will be using textures within your home.

If you happen to follow Jennifer at Taylors Farmhouse Attic, http://taylorsfarmhouseattic.blogspot.com/2009/01/painting-challenges-textures-part-6.html, she has been doing a wonderful little "mini series" on textures in her home. If you don't happen to follow her blog, please stop by...you will be amazed! Make sure you check out her slideshows too!!!

Anyhow, back to what today's post is about....LOL. After watching her show all these amazing pictures of all the textures she has within her home, I realized....I LACK TEXTURE!!!! So, I decided I was going to start adding some more warmth & texture to my decor....but, in my style...."CHAMPAGNE STYLE, ON A BEER BUDGET"!!!!

So, to the fabric pile I went! If you are like me, I love to scour through fabric no matter where I go. Don't always have immediate use for the fabrics I purchase, but I love them too much to pass them by. But, I do follow 3 rules when I purchase fabric.

1st rule of thumb, I NEVER PURCHASE FABRIC WITHOUT A 40% COUPON OR ONSALE ONLY!!!

2nd Rule, If I love it, I buy atleast a yard or two! That way I can atleast make a pillow or a few Ornies from it later.

3rd Rule, I scour Thrift Shoppes linens! You will be amazed at the wonderful fabrics you will find someone has made into a curtain, throw or runner!

Now, I have lots of fabrics in my stash that are no longer large enough pieces for really anything. So, I decided to get them out and use them in one area of my house that with just ALOT of SMALL pieces....It will make a HUGE impact!!!!

I decided my Primitive ladder would be the perfect display area for all these small pieces! Now, if you don't have a ladder like this in your home, use your quilt rack, or hang pieces from pegs on a shelf, fold up pieces ontop a shelf, just layer your fabrics wherever you find a spot! You will just love how this will add more warmth to your home!

Here is my ladder, and believe me, alot of these fabrics are just pieces left over!!!

"Wood'n-it-be-Nice!" Wednesday

I just love today's project! I have been wanting to make a Candle Board for sometime now, so out came the jigsaw, and here is today's project! If you don't have a jigsaw yet, today's project might just encourage you to run out to Walmart and purchase one!!!

"Whales Tail Candleboard"

Supplies:

**Basic Woodworking tools: hammer, sandpaper, tape measure, carpenters square, and jig saw, cordless drill.

*1"x8"x18"Board

*Eight 2 1/2" Square Head Nails (you can use the smaller size if you want...found these at Lowe's!)

*1/4" Drill Bit

*Your Choice of Craft Paint (I am using Black)

*Mimwax Dark Walnut Stain

*Pattern (listed below)

Directions:

First, you need to print & cut out the pattern below. You will do this by right clicking on it, saving it to your computer, and printing it out (as a full page).

Photobucket

Now, lay your pattern down on your board, with the top of the pattern completely to the top of the board; as shown in photo. Trace your pattern.

Photobucket

Take your jigsaw now and cut out your design. Sand edges smooth.

Photobucket

Drill hole now in where indicated in pattern, using your 1/4" drill bit.

Photobucket

I like to like to stain my pieces BEFORE I paint them(I also do it after too as you will see), so I stained mine now with Dark Walnut Stain.

Photobucket

Next, we are going to measure (don't worry this will be painless!) for your nails. I started from the bottom, and measured up 2" and 2" there after up each side. So, starting on the left side, you will have 2", 4" 6" & 8" up the side. Repeat this for the right side then.

Photobucket

Hammer your nails in now where you have marked their placement. Make sure they are in deep but, not all the way to thru. WARNING: Be very careful not to go all the way thru, as with square nails, they don't pierce thru, they split the wood!

Photobucket

Lastly, I took my black craft paint, and very haphazardly painted my board! I left alot not painted, as you see. Remember, this is to look like it has been around for a long time, so, don't cover the board completely with paint. Let dry completely. This is a perfect project for sloppy painters...hehehehehehe!

Now, take your sandpaper and sand away some more of that sloppy paint job! Make sure you get the edges and the top, places where you would think normal wear would take place.

Place your grubby candles ontop of the "nail shelves" now. I was able to place two candles per nail shelf with using the larger nails, this was the reason I chose the larger size.

How Primitive is this?! And if the lights ever go out and you are in need of a candle, you know exactly where to go for them! ENJOY!!!

Happy Tuesday!

Well, we got snow.....AGAIN! Seems like that is becoming the regular news here in Western Pennsylvania! All the local area schools are closed for the day, and it took me 30 minutes longer to get home this morning from work. The roads were just horrible!!! They are calling for 4-6 more inches later today, which will be just around the time I will be heading in for work. UGH! I don't mind driving in the snow, I just hate having to leave earlier to give me extra time to get there! I AM READY FOR SPRING!!!!

Well, since today is not a scheduled craft day here on my blog, I thought I would offer you up some wonderful graphics. I love vintage graphics! Just right click & save them to your computer, then print them out on some printer paper or heavy cardstock and frame them! I like to do 4x6 or 5x7 prints and place them on shelves or with groupings! It is a very easy and inexpensive project to add to your decor. Hope you enjoy!

This is an adorable image done in 2 different tones, I enjoy them both!

Mason Jar Monday!

Well, they say EVERYTHING comes back around....bell bottoms, head bands, 80's rock-n-roll (yes, my kids are rockin out to this with Guitar Hero!) and lighted potpourri jars! Remember this craft?! I sure do!!! I remember seeing these EVERYWHERE about 10 years back! Well, I am bringing it back...with a more primitive twist! These are not only Primitive, but when lit, they give off such a wonderful light scent to your room! Hope you enjoy!

"Primitive Filled Lighted Mason Jar"

supplies:

*Quart Sized Mason Jar

*Piece of coffee stained cheesecloth

*Rosehips

*Potpourri Oil or Primitive Room Spray

*Large Ziploc Baggie

*20 count light strand (brown cord works best!)

*Gumband that fits around the neck of your Mason Jar

*Piece of coffee stained Homespun

Directions:

First, we are going to take your cheescloth & your homespun and coffee stain them. Here is the link if you don't already know how to coffee stain. http://charsethman.blogspot.com/2009/01/tuesdays-tutorial-primitive-fabric.html

Set aside your cheescloth & homespun.

Now, we are going to prepare your rosehips by adding some scent to them. I know that alot of country shops sell Rosehips already scented, if you have access to them that way, great! But, I like to purchase mine unscented, and scent them myself. Either way is fine. Here is where I purchase from, they are fast in shipping, and have unscented & scented Rosehips. http://www.sachet.com/store/Default.asp

Scenting your Rosehips are very easy. I take and put a few cups into a large ziplock baggie. Now, take a few drops of your potpourri oil, and add to the baggie of rosehips. Also, if you are going to use your Primitive Room Spray, just spray lightly your Rosehips. Shake very well. IMPORTANT: You don't need alot of oil to scent your Rosehips! Just a few drops goes a long way!!!

Now, take your 20 count light strand, and put them into your jar; leaving the plug end out. Now plug in your lights, this is the easiest way to start the next step. (I am using the green cord light strand ONLY because that is what I had on hand for this demo...i will redo this though with the brown cord later when I get to the craft shoppe!...LOL)

Photobucket

Add your Rosehips now, a little a time! Pull and arrange your lights as you go, adding a layer at a time of Rosehips, and arranging lights. Don't be afraid to lightly pack your Rosehips in, you can use a spoon if needed to pack them. Repeat this til your Mason Jar is filled to the top of the neck.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Now, take your stained cheesecloth and cover the top of your Mason Jar, making sure to leave your plug end out.

Take your Gumband now and secure your cheesecloth around the neck of the jar.

Photobucket

Now take your piece of Homespun and tie it around the neck of the jar, covering the gumband. You are Done!! As your lights warm up, they will throw a light scent into the room from the scented Rosehips! Hope you enjoy!
Photobucket
***AS YOU CAN SEE, THE GREEN CORD IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR THIS PROJECT...THAT IS WHY I RECOMMEND THE BROWN CORD! BUT, I HOPE YOU GET THE IDEA...AND MAKE ONE OF THESE FOR YOUR COUNTERTOP, SHELF OR STAND!
***I had a suggestion to use the smaller Rice lights as they don't throw as much heat off if you are going to leave your lights on all day!! Personally, I love them little lights and they would be fabulous for this project! Thanks Cindy!

"Stitchin' the Day Away!" Sunday

Here is a drawing that I did last year, and thought I would offer this one up to all of you this Sunday!

This is a drawing that I painted on a wooden board, but it can be stitched as well! I thought it would be great on a nightstand, bedroom shelf or hanging above a bed.

Remember, just right click on the picture...then save it to your computer...and print it out when you are ready to "Stitch the Day Away!"

Hope you all enjoy!!! Have a wonderful Sunday!

"$5 & Under!" Friday

Here is our first "$5 & Under!" Friday of 2009!!! I have a few wonderful projects set up for you this year, and I hope you enjoy each and everyone of them!

This project is so simple, but oh-so-primitive! The best thing is you can customize it for every season, every holiday or to a special friend. I hope you enjoy today's project!

"Framed Primitive Poems"

supplies:
*your choice of wooden frame
*black craft paint
*Piece of Sandpaper
*piece of material
*4 Tea bags
*Small Saucepan
*Chip Brush or Foam Brush
"Oven
*Small piece of Aluminum Foil
*8 1/2"x11" White Cardstock
*Fabric Tack or Beacons 3-in-1 Glue
*Spray Adhesive
*Matte Finishing Spray (I prefer Krylon brand)

Directions:

First, we are going to take you wooden picture frame, and paint it now. So if it has glass, remove it now, as you won't be needing it for this project, also set the backing aside now too, we will be using this later. Paint your picture frame now with your black craft paint; let dry completely.

Once your frame is dry, take and lightly sand the edges and corners with your sandpaper, just to distress and age it some. Wipe dust off lightly now with a damp rag, let dry. Now, take your Matte Finishing Spray and spray your frame lightly with it. Now set aside for later use.

Photobucket

Next, we are going to choose a Poem to put in side your frame. This is where you can now personalize this project. I am giving you a few links that have wonderful poems or sayings that you can use for this project.

Once you have chosen your poem or saying, take and copy & paste it to your Word document Program and print it out on your cardstock

Take your 4 tea bags now and in a cup of water boil them for atleast one minute, this will make the tea nice and strong. Sit aside and cool slightly.

Now take your aluminum foil and line your cookie sheet.

We are going to take and tear your poem out now from your cardstock. I think this gives it a more antique feel.

Photobucket

Time for staining! Take your tea stain and coat your fabric (you can even dip it in and ring it out!) and your poem cut-out with it! I use my foam brush to do the paper with.

Photobucket

Take them now and place them flat onto your foil lined cookie sheet. Place in the oven at 300 degrees; slightly cracking the door with a wooden spoon. Let your items dry in here for about 5-7 minutes. Watching carefully and turning over about halfways thru. IMPORTANT!!! THESE WILL BURN SO WATCH CAREFULLY!!!

When dry, remove from oven and let cool a minute.

We are ready to assemble your project! Take your backing to your frame now and spray with your spray adhesive. Press your fabric down onto the backing, smoothing it out.

Photobucket

Now lay your poem ontop your fabric making sure it is centered, apply a small amount of your fabric tack to the back and glue securely.
I now take and spray my fabric and poem with my Matte Spray, just to seal it from the elements.

Place back inside frame! You are done! What a wonderful personalized gift for you or someone special!

Photobucket

Total Cost of Project:

*frame from $ tree........$1.00

*Piece of Fabric...............Free

*Cardstock.......................$0.15

Total Cost:........................$1.15

***You can also print your poem out on fabric and stitch it onto the bottom piece of fabric for a wonderful Prim look! Both ways are beautiful! Here is a link to my tutorial for fabric printing: http://charsethman.blogspot.com/2008/08/tutorial-tuesday-how-to-print-on-fabric.html

Thursday's "Tip of the Day!"

Wanna find out if your Antique Mirror really is an "antique"?! Here is a great tip!

Is your Antique Mirror really antique?

First, you will need a coin, any coin will do! Now, place your coin right up against the mirror. Does it look like your coin is laying right ontop the other coin? Or does it have a little "space" inbetween them?

If you mirror is really an antique, you will have NO space whatsoever in between the coins! If there is some space, forget it, the mirror has been replaced and is not a true antique!

So, the next time you are at a flea market, garage sale, or thrift shoppe...pull out that coin and see if you might have found an original antique!

My Prize arrived!

Yesterday's mail brought me such a wonderful prize! If you can recall, Cheryl over at Peaceful Blessings Blog http://cherylpgerald.blogspot.com/ was having a wonderful giveaway on her blog, and the winner got to choose one of her handmade dolls in her Etsy Shoppe. Well, I was the winner!!!!! I was just so excited as I NEVER, and I do mean NEVER, win anything! So, when I found out, I hopped right on over to her Etsy shoppe and chose my doll!

Well, my doll arrived yesterday! I was so excited when I go to get the mail and on my front porch is this HUGE box! It was the big box that Polyfil comes in, you all know how big that box is! I see it is from Cheryl, so I hurry in the house to rip it open! Now, I am thinking to myself, this lady really takes great measures in securing her dolls! She must have it wrapped in styrofoam peanuts and lot of tissue paper!!!

Well, let me tell you....that box was NOT full of packing material! THIS DOLL IS HUGE! I WAS TOTALLY AWESTRUCK!!! I would have never guessed that her dolls are that big! I am used to purchasing dolls from 16"-21" in length, not this size! SHE IS SO WELL MADE TOO! Alot of quality work put into these dolls, I tell ya! She has layers of fabric to her dress, bloomers, hand painted boots, head wrap, and real wool hair! JUST BEAUTIFUL! So, please check out Cheryl's Etsy Shoppe http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5997919 if you get a chance, you will love her Mammy dolls!

Here she is, sitting on a regular household chair!

Tuesday's Tutorial "Presidential Framed Prints!"

Happy Inauguration Day! Well, this is a day that your grandchildren's children will be reading about in their history books many years from now. Whether or not the president elect was your choice or not, we as a nation, have become part of History!

So, in honor of this day, I thought I would give you a tutorial on making your own Framed Prints from two well-known Presidents who too have made History. This is a very easy project, and with a few steps, you will think these are aged Originals that have been hanging around for a long time! I hope you enjoy!

"Presidential Framed Prints"

supplies:
*George & Abe Images (included in tutorial)
*White Cardstock
*Your choice of Frames (8x10 or 5x7)
*4 Tea bags
*Paint brush or Foam Brush
*Aluminum Foil
*Cookie Sheet
*Oven
*Matte Finishing Spray (I like the Krylon brand)
*OPTIONAL: Iron

Directions:
First, you will need to grab the Images below. I have already taken and aged them with a Photo editing program. You really have to love online Photo sites that you can just upload & edit your photos...the options are endless!

Below are the 2 Images that I have already edited for you. Just right click on the photo's and save them to your computer.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Now, you will need to print these photos from your computer. You will need to decide what size you are going to print them, I did full sheet for an 8x10 photo. You will need to print them on the white Cardstock paper. This works best for this project, as we are going to age them even further.

Photobucket

Now, We are ready to further age your prints with some strong tea. Take and boil one cup of water in a saucepan. Add your 4 tea bags and boil for an additional minute to really get your tea nice and strong. Let your tea mix cool slightly.
Photobucket
With your paint brush, heavily coat your prints with the strong tea. Don't be afraid to soak down your prints nicely.

Now, line your cookie sheet with a piece of aluminum foil. Take your prints and place them ontop the foil, we are now going to dry them in the oven.

Photobucket

Place your Prints in a 300 degree oven. Slightly crack the door, and closely watch your photos. We are going to dry them this way. I like to check my photos every 5 minutes, as these WILL BURN!! So, watch them carefully, they only take about 5-7 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool a minute.
Photobucket

Once the photos are completely dry, take and spray 3 light coats of your Matte Finishing Spray on them; making sure to dry thoroughly inbetween coats. Also, if you think your prints are too wrinkled or warped now, you can turn them over and with a hot DRY iron, smooth them flat, then spray with sealer.

Remove the backing from the frame and place photos inside. I had a Mat inside my frame, it was white in color. I did paint my Mat with black paint and spray it with the matte finishing spray...I just thought it looked better this way. I have had these frames for several years now, and these were the perfect frames for the Prints. It actually makes the prints seem much larger than they are, since the frames are 16x20 in size. So, if you have a large frame with a 8x10 or 5x7 matted frame...use them! Place print back inside frame and hang!
Photobucket
You can leave the glass intact if you wish, I did choose to leave the glass in mine. I know alot of you like the look of not having glass, but for this project I would recommend the glass. That's it! Fast & Easy, yet very Primitive! Hope you enjoy!

Don't you see all the wonderrful "watermarks" on the prints now?!!! I just love how this makes them look so much more aged! Sorry, the pix are not the greatest, but I was trying to capture the "aged" look for you that they have!

"Stitchin' the Day Away!" Sunday

Good afternoon everyone! I am so excited to bring you another fun-filled day here on my blog! I am calling it "Stitchin' the Day Away!" Sunday. I just love to do stitcheries, and change them out often as the seasons & holidays change. So, I thought I would offer up one of my designs to you each week for you to add to your collection! THAT WILL BE 52 NEW STITCHERY POSSIBILITIES THIS YEAR!

Today's stitchery is in honor of the upcoming Valentine holiday. Although I really don't decorate for this holiday, this is really something that can be left out all year in your home. It could easily sit on a nite table, shelf above a bed, or along side my heart pinkeep.

Just right click on the graphic, save to your computer, and then print it out when you are ready to use it. Hope you enjoy!

Friday's Freebie "Love is in the Air!"

Atleast that is what all the stores and tv ads are promoting this time of year! Seems even before the Christmas Season comes to an end, Valentine hearts are showing up everywhere! So, I thought I would share with you my favorite "Heart".

This is a cute little Heart Pinkeep that I made last year. It actually was the very first pinkeep that I had ever created, and still one of my favorite Pinkeeps yet. It is a very simple design, actually simple enough that I keep it up all year long in my home. That is the one thing that I do like about the Valentine Holiday Season. You can create some really simple pieces that reflect the Holiday, but can still be kept out all year long! This is just one of those pieces.

In my little green "freebie" box on the right you can find my "Love is In the Air!" Heart Pinkeep. It is a very simple & easy design to create and I hope you enjoy!

Here is what it looks like completed:
Photobucket

I thought you all might enjoy these graphics, too. Just right click and save to your computer, then you can print them out and use them as you wish. I will let you know that in the very near future we are going to be using some graphics for a project that I will be posting. So, if you enjoy these, please save them now!

"Wood'n-it-be nice?!" Wednesday

Welcome to my FIRST "Wood'n-it-be nice" Wednesday! I am so excited about this day, as I LOVE working with wood! I hope that this day will become one of your favorite day's to visit with me, as well.

Today's project is a wonderful project that I think alot of you will enjoy. I find this project to be actually harder than it may look! So, please don't be frightened off by it! It just actually involves more steps to complete, than any actual woodworking skills!

As with any Woodworking, I am advising you that you have a few simple tools on hand to start with (Basic Woodworking tools: hammer, sandpaper, tape measure, wood glue, and jig saw). I know as your woodworking progesses you will want to go out and purchase some time-saving tools to speed up the process and make things a little simplier. But, for this project, you don't need any sofisticated tools, just the basics. So, relax and enjoy today's project!

"Wooden Scrub Board"

supplies:
*Basic Woodworking tools: hammer, sandpaper, tape measure, wood glue, and jig saw.
*1" x 8" x 36" Pine Board (you can purchase a 4' long board at Lowe's/Home Depot and they will cut it to 3' for you for FREE!)
*1" x 2" x 6' Pine Board
*1 1/4" Finishing nails
*Craft Paint in your choice of color (I used Black & French Blue)
*Chip Brush for painting
*Handle template (in my freebie box)
*Stain (I like the Dark Walnut by Mimwax)
*Rags
*Optional(for hanging): Drill w/1/4" drill bit & leather strap

Directions:
First, we are going to take and cut the "handle" into your long board. I have included this in my freebie box on the right side toolbar. Download, Print, & cut out the template. Now, trace this onto your board, laying the top of the handle at the very top of the board. You will cut this out now with your jig saw.
Photobucket

If you have never used a jigsaw before, these are very inexpensive to purchase, and very easy to use. It is like a carving knife for wood! Just follow your lines with the blade. If you have never used a jigsaw, please practice on the left over wood you had from this 4 foot board. You will find that you will LOVE this handy tool! This is my most used tool in my house! Here is what it looks like cut out:
Photobucket
Now, we are going to cut your "slats" for the scrub board. Measure and cut 6 1/2" piece from 1"x2" board. Cut this now with your jigsaw. Don't worry if your wood is not exactly straight, remember this is Primitive! Now, take that piece and use it to measure and cut another piece, do this process until you have 6 of them cut.
Photobucket

Now, we are going to need to sand this lightly to before we put them onto your scrub board. I just give a light sanding to round the corners and get all the splintered ends off. I find it is a little easier to do this before they are attached to the board.

Arrange your small pieces of wood onto your scrub board, evenly spacing them, then turning a few in different directions like this has been a well used piece.

Now, take each piece up before nailing and run a small bead of wood glue down the underside center, don't use a whole lot just a nice line. Now take one nail in the middle, and then one on each edge. Repeat this process with the remaining 5 slats. It should look something like this now:
Photobucket
Here comes the fun part! Beat up your piece slightly with your hammer! I like to pound and dent here and there....take the claw and chunk out some wood here and there....and just hit your claw end here and there as well to indent some of the wood. Now, you can really ding your piece up with this process, or just do a little damage...just depends on your preference.
Okay, time for the first coat of paint. If you are just going to stain your piece with a wood stain, you can go right to it now and do that. If you are going to paint it like I have you will need to now go and put your basecoat on, covering the whole piece. I am doing a black basecoat with a colonial blue finish. Let your basecoat dry completely.

Once dry, we are going to be applying our topcoat. This is the way I do mine. Might not be how others do it, just my way! I take my topcoat, french blue is my choice, and I just haphazardly apply this on top my black. I leave some black showing though here and there. Just remember to paint with "the grain" when possible! You really shouldn't paint or stain against the grain if you can. Let dry completely.

Now, time to distress that paint job you just did. Told you to do this haphazardly! This just make this a little easier. Take your piece of sandpaper and sand all the areas of your project where you think it would get the most wear. Around corners, on the slats from all that scrubbing, and the handle would all be good places from years of wear and use.

Once you are happy with your sanding, we are going to "age" you piece with some stain. Take an old rag or a chip brush and apply the stain all over your piece, making sure to get into those cracks and crevices! Wipe off stain with a rag. See how instantly your piece has darkened and become aged?! Now you can take and seal your whole piece with a matte sealer, I like to do mine with it. But, you do not have to.

If you are going to hang your piece, take your drill bit and drill a hole in the top of the handle and string a piece of leather or thick twine through it now.

That's it...you are done! Now you have a new "old" scrub board! You can hang some Homemade Lye Soap in a piece of aged cheesecloth from it, to make it even more Primitive. Hope you enjoy! I would love to see pictures on your blog if you are willing to share them with us!
