I had a few larger pieces that I thought I would collect and see what I could make from it! Now, you can use new wood for this project too. This really was just a "use it up" kinda day for me! So, I will give you the cuts you will need for this project if you wanta start with new wood!
Counter Top Holder
Supplies:
*1"x12"x17" long board
*1"x6"x9" board (you will need 2 of these)
*1"x6"x15 1/2" board
*Rusty Wire
*Craft Paint (Flat Black & Barn Red)
*Mimwax Dark Walnut Stain
*Wood Glue
*1 1/4" finishing nails
Directions:
First, we are going to need to attach our sides. You will do this by attaching your 1x6x9 board to one end of your 1x12x17 board (this is the backboard). All you need to do is make sure it is even along the bottom and side. Add a bead of glue first, then secure with atleast 4 finishing nails. Repeat this process with the other side. Note: this will not be as tall as the backboard, there will be a slight amount of back board that sticks up above the sides.
Now, lets add the "shelf"! Take your 1x6x15-1/2 board and with your tape measure, measure up 3-1/2" from the bottom and nail in on both sides. I would use atleast 4 nails again to secure the shelf nice and tight!
Now, I decided (after I had everything attached...ugh!) that I wanted the sides to slant some in the front! But, you don't have to have that look and just leave it as is. So, I measured down 3" and connected the line to the back of the side board, then took my jigsaw and CAREFULLY cut the slants out (making sure not to cut into the backboard!) But, this would be easier if you cut these before attaching them!
Next, take a small drill bit and drill a tiny hole in the sides of your side boards to "thread" your rusty wire into.
Now, just take and finish your Holder by either painting or just Staining it! I basecoated mine in Black, then topcoated it with Barn Red. Then, sanded it with my palm sander to distress it some. I then took Dark Walnut Stain wiped it on, and then right back off again. Added then adde my Rusty Wire to the front holes I drilled.
Lastly, add your Primitive Goodies and Enjoy!!! This Countertop Holder holds the medium & small Hoosier Canisters (it actually fits 3 of them..2 medium and 1 small) from Walmart very nicely! You can also fit 4 Quart Sized Mason Jars in this too! Many of possibilities with this one!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!! You have such neat ideas! I love visiting your blog to see what new things you have come up with. I am definitley going to try this shelf. I am always buying scrap wood in the hopes of building myself some nice shelves and things but then never do anything with it. I am going to give this one a try! I was wondering with your stain, what kind of rag do you use to wipe it on and off. I tried brushing on stain with a brush and wipping it off with a rag but the rag left behind all kinds of white pieces from the rag on the shelf I was staining. It took forever to try and get them all off, LOL! Thanks so much for taking the time to post these wonderful blogs!!! Have a great weekend! Melissa
